The moment a second surface joins it, the decisions stop being about each area and start being about how they meet — matching levels where a walkway hits a patio, running one pattern family through, getting both surfaces to drain to the same outlet, keeping the material palette from turning into a sampler. That coordination is what a paver design is for, and it is why the published fee steps up sharply between one surface and several.
Published figures put a single-surface design at $150 – $600 and multi-surface design coordination at $600 – $1,500. That is not a linear increase, because the work changes character: a second surface introduces junctions, level matching and a shared drainage strategy that a single area simply does not have.
